The inability achieve and maintain an erection suitable for performing a sexual acts is one of the most common sex related issues that can affect almost all men at some point of their lives. Erection stages
1st stage, sexual arousal that results from senses and thoughts.

3rd stage, penile muscles relax allowing more blood to flow into the penile shaft resulting in an erection.
In case when one of these three stages is affected and goes wrong, the gentle balance gets interrupted and erectile dysfunction takes place. There are numerous factors that can affect these stages, but they are generally divided into two major groups: physical and psychological factors.

- Post-surgical side-effects such as injuries to the penis or testicles, spine or pelvic area. Vascular trauma.
- Birth defects
- Diseases and medical conditions such as diabetes, flu, chronic renal failure, liver disease, arterial sclerosis, Parkinsons disease.
- Abusing street drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines, crack, etc.
- Using antidepressants, beta blockers for high blood pressure, diuretics.
- Smoking.
- Hormone-testosterone deficiency, prolactin secreting pituitary tumors, thyroid disorders.
- Excessive alcohol consumption.
- Ageing
Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction
The psychological causes of erectile dysfunction have a significant impact and should be considered when consulting with your doctor about possible treatment. Psychological problems often arise from physical issues but psychological factors can also cause erectile dysfunction directly. The most common psychological causes of impotence include:
- Inhibited sexual desire
- Anxiety Disorders
- Depression
- Mental fatigue
- Stress
- Guilt
- Relationship problems
- Lack of interest in sex by partner
Identifying the causes of impotence, whether physical or psychological, can be the key for treating erectile dysfunction.
