For men of a tender age, the word “sex” was once solely past-tense. Humans have long known—and far before medicine confirmed it—that when one got to be around 60 years old, the libido began to vanish.
In reality, the male sex drive begins to wain with the teens. Eighteen years old is about the peak of a man’s sexual desires and, ironically, longevity. For women, of course, sexual desire cruelly does not peak until their forties. However, menopause soon follows and the subsequent years are thought to be a time of sexual lack.
Why the Sex Goes Away
There are several theories about why people lose their sex drives as they age:
1. Reduced Hormone Production
For men, it is true that testosterone production lessens in the later years. This certainly plays a role. However, testosterone never completely goes away for healthy men. The truth is, sexual desire in some form or another usually continues on into the 90s; perhaps even centenarians get “randy”.
For women, the loss of hormones is a definite problem once they go through menopause. In fact, that’s what menopause is!
2. Poorer circulation
Some people believe that blood flow has something to do with the loss of sexual desire and ability with age. Certainly circulation does tend to deteriorate in advanced years, and this may contribute to a man’s ability or inability to get and maintain an erection and a woman’s ability or inability to orgasm, but experts believe this has nothing to do with sexual desire—a phenomenon that takes place mostly in the brain.
3. Medication
Some people believe that the side effects of medications cause a significant chunk of the problem. It is true that many medications, especially certain blood pressure and pain medications, can cause erectile dysfunction in men and loss of sex drive in both men and women, but the experience is too universal for side effects to be the sole problem.
4. Psychological factors
Psychologists have theorized that part of the problem is in the mind. We know that stress is one of the largest causes of decreased sex drive, which afflicts 1/3 of women UNDER 50. One of the theories is that accumulated stress, anxiety, and traumatic sexual experiences combine to cause a sexual disorder in many people.
The answer? It’s probably a combination of several factors.
Sex and Health Go Hand-in-Hand
These advanced ages are also infamous for health problems: specifically blood pressure and heart conditions. Another problem that commonly goes untreated in the elderly is depression, which some researchers believe affects as much as 60% of older men and women at some time.
Here’s a short list of other things that people having regular sex enjoy:
• Pain relief
• Less prostate cancer
• Quicker healing
• Slower aging
• Heart health
• Better blood pressure
• Less depression and mental disease
Older People are Enjoying Sex Again
At least in part thanks to Viagra, 1/3 of men ages 75-95 enjoy sexual activity with their female partner. 40% of men 75-79 have had sex in the last year. And most men wanted more.
Luckily, Viagra is available to help. Solve erectile dysfunction (impotence) and save money by buying Viagra online.
